Prospective owners should be informed on the issue of the breed's needs and temperament specifics. Generally, the Rat Terrier is easy to care for. Moreover, the breed does not have a lot of inherited diseases and is generally healthy. The average life span of the Rat Terrier is about 15-16 years.

Much attention should be given to exercise needs of the Rat Terrier. The dog requires involvement in a lot of activities. Unfortunately, not every owner can supply the dog with the necessary amount of exercise. This perhaps is one of the major reasons given when abandoning Rat Terriers.
